1916 "Tooman" Tent
This is our rendition of the Abercrombie & Fitch "Tooman Tent", as seen in their 1916 catalog.
This is often considered to be one of the very first, fully contained, lightweight backpacking tents. It would have seemed quite luxurious, especially considering that troops in Europe were sleeping in 19th century style half-shelters at the time. This tent has a fully sewn-in floor and mosquito netting to keep bugs out. The front doors and side windows provide ample ventilation. It requires no poles, and can be set up with just a single rope and a decent anchor point. A springy tree sapling works really well! in 1916, this tent was available in two fabrics, canvas, called "Emeralite" or "balloon silk", called "Verdalite", which was a lightweight cotton. Both were green. As such, we only offer this tent in green. Our choice of fabric is very close to the heavier "Emeralite" canvas.
While we have made every attempt to make this as true to the original tent as possible, upon building a sample to the specs of the A&F catalog, it became immediately clear that most modern folks would find the space incredibly tight. As such, we have increased the overall size slightly. Of course, this increases the weight as well. The specs are as follows:
Length: 10 feet.
Width in back: 3 feet
Width in front: 6 feet
Height in front: 6 feet
Height in back: 0
Total weight of tent only: 8.5 lbs (Does not include rope or stakes.)
In order to keep the cost down, we will let you come up with your own stakes and rope. You can also add a pole if you prefer. This is a good idea if there aren't a lot of trees where you camp. Stakes can be easily whittled out of a sturdy wood. Our tent conforms to all regulatory CPAI-84 requirements for flame resistance. It is also waterproof and mildew resistant. The body fabric is a poly-cotton blend that helps us conform to these requirements. It looks and smells like cotton canvas, and all the loops and ties are cotton. PLEASE NOTE: The above photos are of a prototype tent that is very close to the final product. There are a few minor improvements on the final product. While we cannot use the original A&F name that was on this tent, we will have the "Tooman Tent" name and "Logsdon & Co" in a period font imprinted on the door.
